Bulging

The billboard said, “She who indulges, bulges!” I had to laugh because I am guilty of indulging in way too many sweets! Then I started to think this can also apply to our spiritual life. Jesus said in Matthew 12:33, “…the tree is known by its fruit.” This means the attitudes of your inner self come out being displayed like fruit on a tree.

Our attitude is a display of what is going on in our heart. The heart is very deceiving and will lie to you, making you think you are righteous, but your actions are the real truth of what’s hidden in your heart. These actions are displayed each time an event in your life takes you by surprise.

The devil knows what your triggers are and will use them any time he thinks you are growing closer to God. That’s why when you finally decide to go to church regularly everything goes wrong just before its time to leave or when you decide to tithe the car breaks down. These events should not take us by surprise to anger us or even sidetrack us because we know his schemes.

1 Peter 5:8-9 states, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.”

Peter is telling you to resist him by standing firm in your faith. He cannot devour you if you have spent time with God building your faith. God builds our faith by showing us the correct way to deal with each situation the Devil tries to bring, but you must take the time to ask and seek for the way.

Everyday Jesus spent time alone with God, He got up while everyone was sleeping to seek God. When we read through His life we can see He was tempted many times to be sidetracked, but because He was strong in His faith, when the Devil tried to attack, He knew just what to do. In Matthew 16:21-23, Jesus told His disciples He must suffer, be killed, and raised, then Peter said to Him ,“God forbid, this shall never happen to You.” Jesus recognized this as an attack from the Devil trying to get Him to think about the feelings of man rather than Gods purpose.

What you indulge in your life will bulge out!

Are you indulging in prayer, bible study, fasting and giving? Then you will bulge that Christ like character we all seek; or are you indulging in doing whatever you please bulging a life ruled by selfish desires?

Test yourself, what does your fruit look like? Galatians 5:19-26.
