Focus

Isn’t it annoying when you are trying to have a conversation with someone and they are looking at their phone?

I noticed lately I am doing something similar to God. When I am singing worship songs I have noticed that I’m singing the words but at the same time I’m usually thinking about something else.

I am not sure how this is even possible, but I have caught myself doing this many times.

As it began to bother me, my lack of focus, I started to search for the reason and God in His faithfulness led me to it.

It is because I have not put any thought into my praise. I just sing along to whatever is playing not giving thought to what I am doing, which is mindless worship.

God showed me Proverbs 16:3 which says, “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts will be established.”

He is saying for me to commit my thoughts to Him first before singing, which will establish my thoughts on Him. This will lead to true worship in song!

I believe David learned the same thing, in Psalm 57:7 he says, “My heart is fixed, my heart is fixed. I will sing and give praise.”

God gives us His all and I should put all of my attention and focus on Him in times of worship.

Father, help me to first put my focus on You, enabling me to truly worship You. In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen.

  1. Excellent advice here. I also notice my lack of concentration when reading the Bible in the morning. Too often I focus on the day ahead and not on God’s Word. But as you say in your devotion, quoting Proverbs 16:3, the key is to commit our works to the Lord BEFORE we endeavor to do them, and pray for Him to give us concentration and devotion to Him. Another great post to begin the day with.
