A Picture Of Anger

While reading the Psalms I came across one that is a perfect picture of how anger rises up and spews out of our mouth.

Psalm 39:1-3, ” I said, I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with the muzzle, while the wicked are in my presence. I was dumb and silent, I refrained even from good; and my sorrow grew worse. My heart was hot within me; while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:”

We all try to keep a check on our mouth, trying not to make our Heavenly Father look bad by our speech, but sometimes the anger just boils within us until we cannot keep our mouth shut.

It looks as if the Psalmist is going through the same thing. Saying in verse 3, his heart was hot and the fire burned, then he spoke with his mouth.

When ever we get angry it is hard to keep our mouth shut. This is when we have to make a choice. We can choose to lash out at the person or we can choose to pray.

At first it seems as if the Psalmist is going to lash out at people, but if we look at verse 4 we see instead he chose to pray, saying, “Lord make me know my end, and what is the extent of my days, let me know how transient I am.”

Whenever we are angry, if we go to God first, speaking to Him helps to releave the tension. I think the Psalmist was just saying, God what’s going on, am I going to survive this?

Father, help us to always choose to pray first, before lashing out at the ones who hurt us. Thank You for being an understanding God, one who is able to take our anger and help us through it.  In Jesus name, amen.
