Stop It Now

Have you ever caught yourself making the same comments your parents did even though you said you would never?  Things like, holy cow, I’ll be darned, or you will poke your eye out?

We repeat what we have learned as children, even if we do not consciously notice. This repeating of behaviors can go far beyond funny sayings into your very character making you repeat the same vices your parents and even your grandparents had.

You will find in most cases of people who smoke cigarettes their parents also smoked. In my case my grandparents, my parents and I smoked, and now two of my children do.

In the cases of alcoholism usually it is also handed down from the previous generation. My first husband, who is now deceased, was an alcoholic, and so was his father and his grandfather.

But it does not have to be this way, you can take active steps to make these vices stop with you!

Exodus 20:5-6 states, “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing  lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep my Commandments.”

This verse is telling us that to those who love Him and follow His word, He will show lovingkindness. This lovingkindness is shown in the form of teaching you how to stop the behavior, stopping the curse with your generation.

When my ex-husband was at the height of his alcoholism I took active steps to stop it with his generation. I am happy to say that it did, so far, none of our children have a problem with alcohol.

God is ready and waiting to stop the curse of generational habits with you, all you have to do is ask and take action.

Father, help us to see the generational vices that keep us from you, and give us the strength to take action to stop them with us. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
