Excuses

Have you ever noticed in the parable of the dinner in Luke 14:16-24, the excuses people came up with for not attending the dinner? They are the same excuses we use when we do not really want to do something.

“But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ “And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ “Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.”

These excuses center around possessions, work and family. Today we might say, I can’t come to Church because I just bought a boat and Sunday is my only free day. Or, I can’t go out to witness because I need to go into the office today while no one is there. Or, I won’t be at the prayer meeting because family has come into town.

Those who rejected the invitation lost out on what good the man had to offer. We don’t know what blessing God has in store for us if we leave the excuses behind and give our all to Him.

Father, help us to see the value in worship, work and prayer and help us to give You our best. In Jesus name, amen.
