Life Lesson #2

Paul said in Philippians 4:11, “…I have learned how to be content in whatever circumstance I am.”

Being content in all areas of my life is something I strive for each day. One day, as I was crying out to God about my circumstances, I realized that when Paul said, “I learned,” it ment that he had to experience each circumstance in order to learn.

In verse 12 Paul says, “I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity…”

In order to learn contentment with humble means, he had to experience being poor. The only way to learn, is to go through.

In verse 12 he says, “I have learned the secret…”

What is this secret to contentment? Verse 13 explains, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

When I am going through tough circumstances, the Holy Spirit always gives me a verse, a song or a word from Him that helps me to rise above and find peace, knowing that He is in control and will work it out for good.

Jesus can help you rise above the circumstances of life, bringing you to a place of contentment when you rely on Him.

Life lesson: You must go through in order to learn contentment.

Father, help me to rise above the circumstances of life and teach me how to be content in each one, making me more like Jesus. In His name I pray, amen.

  1. Excellent devotion. It reminds of something I heard almost 30 years when I became a Christian. I was listening to a cassette tape (just to show you how far back that was!), and the preacher said, “There is no shortcut to maturity.” In other words, just like you said in your post, we must go through the difficult things of life, experience them, before we can come to a full contentment in the Lord.
