Life Lesson #8

In the life of Onesimus, written about in the book of Philemon, we can see a perfect example of the work of God in a new believer.

Oneimus was the runaway slave of Philemon, who was brought to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through the preaching of Paul and Timmothy, but soon after they sent him back to his master.

Why?

After becoming a believer, the Holy Spirit leads us to make amends with people for the past mistakes in our life, if possible.

All of our sins are forgiven and forgotten at once with the Father, but sometimes we leave behind people who have a grudge against us.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:23-24, “Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

Jesus is saying, making amends with people is far more important then the gifts you are giving Him.

Also notice it did not say, you have something against them, but they against you.

Onesimus had left a sore spot in the life of his former master, and it was up to him to make amends, which Paul and Timothy were leading him to do.

Life lesson: God desires us to not only seek forgiveness from Him, but also anyone we might have hurt in the past.

Father, thank you for this great example in your word of bringing unity between people and also giving me a clear conscience to walk with You, as I make amends to anyone I may have hurt. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
