Have you ever noticed yourself looking or hearing something but not acknowledging it? A few months ago, I noticed while working, that I was not acknowledging the actual numbers of the posted speed limit sign. They are posted at the beginning of the road and I would see the sign but I didn’t acknowledge it, and a few seconds later I would wonder what was the speed limit was! I have also found this happens when God tries to tell me something. While listening to sermons I would hear God say something, but instead of taking that thought and thinking about it, I would dismiss it, continuing on with what I was thinking previously.
Jesus addresses this issue in Mark 4. During His parable of the sower, He said in verse 15, “And these are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them.” Satan is more crafty and cunning then we will ever be able to recognize. I would think this would be my own fault of not paying attention, but Jesus said that he immediately comes and steals that word which God is trying to tell us.
I think 2 Corinthian 10:5, “Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,” could also be used in this circumstance. In order to defeat the devil when we hear a word from God, we need to take that thought captive and think about it and study it until the word is able to take root in us.
Father, help us to recognize when we hear You speak, to take the thought captive and meditate on it until it becomes rooted and grounded in our life. In Jesus name, amen.
