Those of us who really want to develop a deeper relationship with God might find that He asks you to give up certain things. He does not ask this because there is something wrong with these things, but because it further empties your life, helping you be free from the things that sometimes hold you back.
2 Timothy 2:3-4 states, “Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.”
If you want to be active in the Kingdom of God, you must listen to the Spirits call to rid yourself of those things that cause you to be tangled, things that cause you to not be free. In our day these things could be financial, emotional or even what you eat. Imagine God asking you to go on a mission trip but on this trip there will be no soda, coffee, candy or fast food. Will doing without affect your attitude? Do these things have you entangled? To be a soldier in active service is to be completely set aside for God, ready to do anything He asks.
Father, help us to become completely free from those things that keep us entangled in our life so we are free to work for you. In the name of Jesus, amen.
