2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.”
I have fought with the spirit of fear since my childhood. Until about 9 I was fearless without any worry but then as the devil, who tries to mess up everyone’s life, sent the bullies and teasers my way, I soon became afraid of their words and allowed them to have power over me.
When I was old enough to get away from the bullies he sent different fears to chase me, even to the point of not wanting to leave my house for fear of driving. When I reached this point I finally started to actively fight the spirit of fear in my life. Everyone knows I love to drive so much that I even drove for a living, but at that low point in my life the fear of even driving to the store completely paralyzed me and I would stay in the safety of my home and get others to do my errands. When I finally realized that I cannot live my life stuck in the house I made myself drive somewhere every day until I was no longer afraid.
The devil keeps fear in our life because he knows a person who lives fearlessly can be used mightily by God, but God gives us the power to overcome that fear.
In 1 Samuel 17, while David was a youth he fearlessly killed the giant while all the men of war stood by shaking with fear. God our Father never intends us to be fearful but to have the same spirit we see in children, fearlessly living their life relying on their parents to keep them safe.
Romans 8:15 says, “We have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear but a spirit of adoption by which we cry Abba Father.”
God has also given us the power to love. It is a very difficult task to love people who have hurt you. Jesus’ family must have hurt Him when they did not believe His words and thought He was crazy, but He still loved them and says to us in Matthew 5:44, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven…” He did not react like most people who hold each and every offense against those who hurt them but chose to love and forgive, and He has given us the power to do likewise.
God has also given us the power of a sound mind. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:16 that we have the mind of Christ. Since we have the mind of Christ then we can defeat the Devils fiery darts by doing what Jesus did, which was setting His mind on God the one able to save Him.
2 Corinthians 10:5 says that we can take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
To take a thought captive is to control that thought and put it in its rightful place. It’s when we take ahold of the thoughts thrown to us by the devil and believe that they are true that the devil wins.
God will keep in perfect peace those who keep their mind on Him. Isaiah 26:3
Father, please help us to take the thoughts the devil throws at us captive, to put them in the rightful place behind us and out of our mind that we might focus on you and the task you have given us. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen
