A Heart of Urgency

Not much is said about Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, but something I have noticed, he had a great quality that God desires each of us to have, a sense of urgency. In Matthew 2, early in  Jesus’ childhood, Joseph was warned in a dream that Herod was seeking the child’s life and the scripture states in verse 13 that Joseph immediately got up and took them away to Egypt.

“And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.’ So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.”

Joseph got up from bed in the middle of the night, woke up Mary and the baby, packed all the things and left! How many of us would have at least waited till morning? If it were me, I would have reasoned why I should wait until a time more convient. I would have thought, the angel said Herod is “going to search”, not that he had already started, so there is plenty of time, no need to rush! But Joseph did not reason in his heart about the command the angel spoke, instead he immediately got up and made it happen.

Too many times we reason our way right out of Gods will for our life, adding in what we think, trying to suppose what God could have “really meant” by what He said. Let us all have the same sense of urgency that was found in Joseph, as we strive to have a heart that follows after God.

Father, help me to be more like Joseph, making Your will a priority in my life, and whenever You ask, help me to immediately get it done. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, my Savior and Lord. Amen
