I love the promise of Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” I had always thought this verse meant for me to be pleasing to God, at which most times I feel like a complete failure. But I discovered this means for me to find MY delight in Him. Consider the bold words in the surrounding verses 3-7.
Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him.
The words trust, delight, commit and rest involve you putting all you have in Him.
To trust in Him; by having complete confidence, knowing He always has your best interest in mind, even if you do not understand what’s going on.
To delight in Him; by enjoying who He is and His ways, to be satisfied with Him, to believe His word is true and to not seek earthly things, but more of Him.
To commit to Him; by whole heartedly pledging yourself to Him, to say and do like John the Baptist in John 3:30, “He must increase but I must decrease.”
To rest in Him; by allowing your mind to be at peace at all times, knowing He is watching over everything that’s going on in your life and has a plan to make it work for good.
Father, help me to trust, delight, commit and rest always in You, as You lead and guide my life into the righteousness of Jesus Christ, Amen
