Imagine, a co-worker spreads rumors about you, hurting you so bad it takes everything you have just to show up to work each day. Now imagine their car breaks down, inside you jump for joy until God says, “I want you to give them a ride home.” Often times God will ask us to minister to someone who has hurt us and it can make us angry to think that God would pick their side and not punish them for doing you wrong. Jonah went through a similar situation. It is said the land God wanted Jonah to witness to had been a long time enemy of Israel. Jonah could not believe God would want him to go there because he knew God would be forgiving and not destroy Nineveh for their acts against Israel.
Jonah 3:10-4:2, “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. So he prayed to the LORD, and said, “Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.”
And it is the same way with us! We don’t want to help those who hurt us because we think it is not fair, but we must remember that God is the one who knows their heart. He alone knows why a person acts the way they do and He alone knows what will bring them to Jesus. Our job as Christians is to help God lead people to Jesus. God is able to show people grace and love when they see the acts of Jesus displayed through us when we forgive them.
Romans 2:4 states, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”
When God wants you to bless a person in your life who has hurt you, remember His goodness towards them will lead them to repentance.
Father, help me to be forgiving to the one who has hurt me and to be ready to help if you ask me. In Jesus name, amen
