Moving Past The Pain

I was watching a T.V. show and one of the characters was experiencing great pain from a offence committed to them. The person who was with them said, “Live, only moves forward.” What a true statement this is. To live is to always be moving forward. Many years ago an acquaintance was laid off from their dream job. This person was so hurt that they could not get past it and lived in depression for many years following. I have also met church people who were so hurt in the church that they stayed out, not being able to move past it.

Sometimes we are under the misconception that forgiveness is only for the other person. But forgiveness is also for us. Forgiveness helps us move on with our life. But if you don’t forgive then you’re stuck in the past, like those who were not able to move on. I have found for me it is easier to forgive if I put myself in their shoes and try to imagine what they were thinking, or to even apply the understanding of the sin nature. The more you are able to envision where the person was mentally, the more you will be able to understand and the easier it will be to forgive, realizing that you also make mistakes and hurt people.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ has also forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:30-32.

Father, help us to forgive every past hurt, allowing us to move forward. In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen
