What do you think when you hear the phrase, “Spirit filled?” If you’re like me, when I thought of the question, I thought of someone being so anointed with the Holy Spirit of God, that they prophesy, speak in tongues and display many mighty miracles, like in the book of Acts. I have spent many years wondering why, even though I know that I am saved by the blood of Jesus and have received the Holy Spirit’s power, evidenced by a changed life, that I had never spoken tongues or displayed any other miraculous manifestations of the Spirit. Then God show me that this has been a widely misunderstood teaching in the church today and He showed me when someone is anointed by the Spirit, it is not for them to manifest signs and wonders, but is for ministering to others.
The verses in Ephesians 5:18-19 show us that to be filled with the Spirit means more than speaking in tongues or performing a miracle, but also to minister to others by encouragement. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…” If the person you are ministering to needs a sign or miracle then the Holy Spirit will direct you and give you the power needed for it to happen, just as He did for Jesus, in Luke 5:17, “…and the power of God was present for Him to perform healing.”
Father, thank you for leading us into all of the truth. Help us please, to always search the Scriptures to learn the truth of Your word so that we will not be deceived. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, amen.
