Superficial Worship of God

During this time of the year we start to think about the things in which we are most thankful. As I considered the things which I’m most thankful for God began to show me, although I was indeed thankful for all He had done in my life, my expressions of thankfulness were on a superficial level.

He pointed out, for me to say “I am thankful for all you have done” is a shallow statement. He challenged me to deeper level of thanksgiving by showing me to substitute meaningful words of praise, like value, honor, and respect, admire and appreciate.

I took some time to think about each of these words given to me, asking myself “Why do I value God?” “Why do I value Jesus?” and “Why do I value the work of the Holy Spirit in my life?”

After spending time in reflection, I realized a great difference in my level of worship. It reminds me of the song that says to count your many blessings, name them one by one and see what God has done.

When time is taken in reflection for all of God’s goodness, it brings you to a closer, personal level of worship. I challenge you to take the time to express to God how grateful you are for His wonderful attributes.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Father, help us to not be superficial in our praise for all that wonderful things you do in our life. In the name of Jesus, amen
