My salvation story begins on a clear early morning drive to work. I was feeling alone and tired of life when a song came on the radio, saying “Show me the way.” Looking out of the window I saw the stars in the sky and said to God, “Why aren’t you showing me the way?” Not long after someone invited me to church and God has been showing me the way ever since.

I find it interesting, in John 14:5-7 Thomas also said he did not know the way. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.”

With so many different ideas and thoughts in this world, it is easy not to know the correct way to walk. Jesus shows us through His spoken words and the life He lived exactly how to walk.

Jesus said, “I am the way.” Jesus shows us the way to the Father by showing us the way of righteousness through salvation. He in fact becomes our righteousness.

We really need to understand that our righteousness is based solely on Jesus’ sacrifice. No amount of work or being good could ever earn enough righteousness in God’s eyes.

Confusion comes when we read verses like, Matthew 5:20 when Jesus said, “For I say to you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” And again, 1 John 3:10, “By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.”

These verses make it sound like we must be righteous within ourselves in order to please God, but we know all of our righteousness is to God as filthy rags, So I find there to be two kinds of righteousness being talked about.

The first is a righteousness between you and God. This righteousness can only be accomplished when you understand you are a sinner, unable to be good enough to save yourself, causing you to cry out to God for salvation through Jesus Christ.

The second righteousness is between you and the world. God expects you to listen to Him and allow Him to change your life to accurately represent Him. This shows people the Father by your righteous deeds, like Jesus did saying, “When you see Me you see the Father.”

Father, thank you for Jesus the one who brought salvation through his death on the cross. Help us to be an accurate representation of you showing people the way of your truth. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen
